The Truth About Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

search engine optimizationLast week I took a four hour class on Search Engine Optimization (SEO – making it easy for search engines like Google to find your website and give you first page ranking)

The one thing that was very clear is how challenging it can be to show up on the first page of Google. Especially for a small business owner or sales professional.

Take a search term like “small business marketing”. When I typed this into Google on Nov 21, 2011, 224 million pages were found. Google’s default first page results has about ten unpaid results.

So you can see the challenge I will have to get my website in one of those ten spots and keeping it there. I’m on page one right now, but that could change in minutes and it took me months and months to get there.

There are two KEY ELEMENTS to SEO:

1) On-page SEO
2) Off-page SEO.

On-page SEO are the things you have control over; like your keywords selection, the content and design of your site. On the other hand, off-page factors like “Back Linking” take a lot more work to manage and control.

SEO isn’t magic. It probably won’t land your site among the Top 10 websites for highly popular search terms. But there actions you can take to improve your rankings.

There are over twenty strategies you can implement to improve your Google positioning. The most effective one is called ” Back Links Building” but it’s really, really hard to do this.

Another strategy is adding your business profile to free online directories, but there are over sixty major directories to choose from.

It can take 6-12 months to start seeing improvements in your rankings. And when you get to the number one page, you have to keep working to keep it there.

Some corporations are hiring teams of people to work daily to keep their page one presence.

Don’t fall prey to SEO scams, some companies will promise you the world, but they can’t guarantee page one position over night. Nobody can guarantee number one ranking.

If you have any question on SEO or want to pick my brain on what I discovered, give me a call.
